New Ships, New Routes: Planning Ahead for French Polynesia
October 19, 2026
French Polynesia rarely stands still, and the coming seasons bring new ships, new air links and a fresh look at the far south. Here is a round-up of what is currently on offer and what has been announced, with the details as published.
New ways to reach the islands
Air Tahiti Nui has announced a new year-round direct Sydney–Papeete service, with the first Papeete–Sydney flight arriving on 14 December 2026 and Sydney–Papeete departures every Tuesday and Friday. Tahiti Tourisme notes the route will add more than 60,000 seats a year and restore a direct connection between Australia and the islands (Tahiti Tourisme). The route is codeshared with Qantas on a three-class Boeing 787-9, cutting travel time to around eight hours (Luxury Travel News).
On the Japan side, Air Tahiti Nui resumed the Narita–Papeete route on 8 September and will move to year-round scheduled service with no off-season suspension starting next year (Herald Corp). For summer 2027, the airline will add daily Paris–Los Angeles–Tahiti flights, alongside the Sydney route and Narita flights in July and August 2027 (Deep Arrival).
Air Tahiti Nui currently lists sale fares from Auckland to Tahiti, with onward domestic flights to Moorea, Bora Bora, Rangiroa and other islands operated by Air Tahiti and Air Moana (Air Tahiti Nui). It also advertises Paris–Tahiti round trips from €1,628 including tax and Paris–Los Angeles round trips from €874 for this winter (Air Tahiti Nui). Air Moana, meanwhile, offers 10% off Premium fares with promo code PREMIUM10 for travel until 10 January 2027 (Air Moana), and will begin service to Tikehau in April 2027 (Air Moana).
The far south, by sea
Aranoa, the new combined cruise and supply vessel from Aranui Cruises, will sail 13-day/12-night voyages to Rimatara, Rurutu, Tubuai and Raivavae from March 2027, with some crossings reaching Rapa Iti (Linternaute). The ship has a deliberately reduced capacity of 198 passengers and is designed to limit emissions, including noise (Le Figaro). Tahiti Tourisme currently lists Aranoa's inaugural 13-day Austral Islands cruise including Rapa, 6–18 March 2027, with a 20% launch special (Tahiti Tourisme). For a 2026 option, Aranui 5's 13-day Austral Islands Hidden Paradise cruise is also currently listed (Tahiti Tourisme).
